Southside Youth Soccer League Newsletter
May 2003
Greetings to all Southsiders. Lots has been going on since closing day, all of it aimed at improving your soccer experience at Southside Youth Soccer League (SYSL). First, we have had some changes in the Board of Directors and still need to fill some positions. Doug McCown is stepping down as President due to a new job commitment. Doug worked very hard this past season and we thank him for all of his efforts. He will continue to help as a Board Member at Large. Listed below are the current Board Members and their emails for contact purposes. We do not list home phone numbers of the Board, you can call the SYSL phone number and leave messages in specific mailboxes (there may be a couple of days lag in responding). Emails will be answered promptly. The phone number is 865-BALL (2255).

In order for the quality of the SYSL program to improve, from both an administrative and soccer standpoint, we need to get more people involved. It is imperative to the future of SYSL and our children that some more people step forward to volunteer. We need more than just Board Members too, if you can spend a few hours helping on a committee or for a special event or registration then please, please, please help out. If you want the quality of your soccer experience to improve (and frankly it was below par last year) then email either myself or Ondria if you are interested in helping in any way.
New Director of Coaching
Southside is very proud to announce that it has reached an agreement with Rui Farias to become our new Director of Coaching. Rui will oversee all coaching and player development programs at Southside. This move is very positive for Southside. We will now have the same kind of Professional resource that other Leagues have to improve the quality of our soccer. Rui’s responsibilities will include; hiring and coordinating competitive coaching staff, developing playing systems for competitive teams and set curriculum for coaches and training sessions, provide training sessions for each team, develop a 1-day coaching camp for competitive coaches, provide a minimum of four coaching clinics for recreational coaches, provide training sessions for recreational teams, develop a coaching program for competitive coaches to provide sessions for recreational teams, and develop a coaching program where older competitive players work with younger recreational players (adopt a player). Rui has a great background in soccer, he grew up and learned the game in Portugal and has coached at the Professional, High School, and Club Levels. He played with the Tampa Bay Rowdies amongst other teams. We are sure that Rui will be a great asset to SYSL. Please help welcome Rui to Southside and support him in any way you can. In fact, one way you can show immediate support is to attend a camp he is putting on at the Pinellas Expo Center. This will be an indoor camp (yes there is A/C) and will be held on June 2nd –6th. There are day and evening sessions. Call 572-7100 for more information.
Fall Registration
We will be holding registration for the 2003/2004 Recreational Program in August and September. Please check our website for more information or call 865-2255.
Club Program

Southside intends to field team in the following age groups next year:
