President’s Message

Hi everybody in the Southside Soccer Nation.  The 2003/2004 season is just around the corner.  The competitive players are winding up tryouts and getting ready for their first practices at the end of July (see club news).  The first recreational registration is only 40 days away as I write this (less by the time you read this).  Please see information below on dates and times.  Our goal this year is to grow the league not just in numbers of players, but in all aspects.  We want to grow the player’s abilities and interest in soccer.  We want to grow parents knowledge of the game and their interest in volunteerism.  We want to grow our profile in the community so we can make a difference.  Many studies have shown that kids who are involved with youth sports do much better in their academic work and are much less likely to use drugs or join gangs.  Being part of an activity like soccer makes a child more well rounded.  At Southside we are going to make this activity an exiting and wholesome pursuit in which we can all be proud.  As a parent I also find that many of my close friends have been made at the soccer field.  As you go through the season rooting for a team along with other parents you tend to form a bond with those other parents many of which lead to friendships.  This will be my 11th season as a parent/coach/volunteer at Southside and I hope there are many more years and new friendships to come.

See you on the soccer field

Stuart Mellish

Recreational Registration

Information for the 2003/2004 fall season is given below.  Please note that we are having registration in two different locations, both of which are new for us.  The Saturday registrations will be at the Lakewood United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, which is behind the Kash N’Karry shopping center.  The Wednesday night registrations will be at the Enoch Davis Center, which is on 18th Avenue South just west of Southside Fundamental Middle School.  The two registrations at the Enoch Davis Center are very big for us as they are in a part of the community that has not been well served by Youth Soccer Leagues in the past.  We hope that our growth philosophy can help change this.

We need volunteers to help with registration.  If you can help then please contact our volunteer coordinator Linda Wilson at 865-3311 or come to our next Board meeting on July 23rd at 6:30PM.  The location will be Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, Room 6.  We need people to work the registration sessions and to put up signs around town and to publicize registration in any other way we can.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you can help Southside Youth Soccer League in  any way please contact Linda Wilson at 865-3311 or Stuart Mellish at smellis1@tampabay.rr.com.  You can also call our information line at 865-BALL (2255) to leave a message.

We have one Board spot open which is the Field Manager position.  The Field Manager is responsible for getting the fields marked each week and generally keeping up the maintenance of the Complex.  The City is responsible for mowing the fields and they maintain all the fencing and lighting.  We have to keep up the concession stand, fieldhouse (not bathrooms), goals, nets, etc.  If you are a little bit handy then please help us out.  We also need people to help on committees or for special projects.

Coaches

Calling all coaches.  We need all coaches from last year and anyone else interested in being a coach or assistant coach to contact Chris Colonel at chrchunter@aol.com or leave a message at 865-2255. In order to have a strong league it is imperative that we have plenty of well trained coaches.  This year we will be very proactive in providing training sessions to our rec coaches.  Our new Director of Coaching (DOC) Rui Farias will be holding a series of training sessions for both coaches and players prior to the fall season.  We can turn anybody into a credible soccer coach who can provide a positive soccer experience for our players.

Club News
